I have been dying to try out blending watermelon for ages. All of that juice, I was sure it would blend up beautifully. The day I decided to do it – there also happened to be a half bottle of white wine in the fridge. And so, well it somehow made its way into my health juice.. Which meant that I actually made a cocktail. But hey – the wine was getting old, right?
Jokes aside, I am quite proud of my newest recipe. I did google it to see if anyone else is doing this or am I just some mad wine head loosing sanity in the heat. And it turns out this is actually quite a trendy drink!
Now as far as taste goes, I would recommend that you use a sweetish wine, or at least not very dry . I think a light, one of those ‘low kilojoule’ ones would also go quite nicely. I enjoyed the combination very much, but I did find that the wine bit in at the end of the flavor profile and it would have been nicer if that were not so. But hey, perhaps in my heat induced haze I just used too much wine!
Anyhoo what I did basically was to cut up and deseed carefully, a round of watermelon. I then promptly whizzed this up in this manual hand blender jug I have. Yes it is that easy to blend up watermelon. I then proceeded to let it rest in the fridge with a sprig of mint out of the window box. This is optional I would say – I just felt desperate for as much freshness that could be gotten from this ‘cooler’ as possible!
Once I thought I had infused a bit of minty coolness into the watermelon mix, I simply poured it into a glass with a little white wine. And that was that. I did consider freezing the drink to make into a slushy, but who’s got time for that in such desperate weather.
The result? Very nice. Next time around I think I might try it with champagne – yes we have it lying around in crates. Not. Or perhaps make a true cocktail with some vodka and soda water.
What I most liked about this drink was that I did not have to put much wine into it.

White Wine Watermelon CoolerPrint This
- 1 Large round of watermelon
- +- 1/5 bottle white wine
- Sprig of mint (optional)
- You will also need:
- A blender, stick blend, cake beater or manual jug beater
- De-rind and de-pip your watermelon.
- Whizz up to a smooth-ish consistency (I quite enjoyed the odd tiny watermelon bit).
- Add mint sprig and chill for 20+ minutes.
- Pour into glass and add a small amount of white wine.
As far as the wine to watermelon mix ratio goes you can decide that for yourself. Take a few tastes and see what suites your preference.
